Shop wall mount and countertop sculptures at MiglioDesign! These original works of art incorporate vintage materials that come together to form an antique industrial sensibility suitable for any interior. Working with wooden foundry molds is my primary focus (although not the only one). Whether recognizable as an everyday object or not, these patterns designed for metal casting offer intriguing shapes and forms. From sprockets and gears to pipes and wheels, the wood foundry molds themselves required absolute precision. After all, a cast is only as good as its mold. This is why pattern-making was one of the highest paying trades dating back well over 100 years. In today’s world, wooden molds are still made, but more and more of them are milled by robots or made with 3-D printers. These new technologies can produce a sand mold far quicker than when things used to be done by hand. As a result, old-fashioned pattern-makers pay the price and are a dying breed.

As an artist, seeing and holding these vintage antiques opens up creative avenues left and right. Seen in a new light, old foundry molds offer an almost limitless capacity for invention. They hold great visual appeal based on both their engineering heritage and the hand-made markings and tooling inscribed by the original pattern-maker.
